No more loose hubs!
Limiting circuit disconnects with mechanically ventilated patients is crucial to avoiding infection and de-recruitment of the lungs. The longer an endotracheal tube (ETT) remains in a patient (especially under active, heated humidity), the softer and more pliable the material of the tube becomes. With time, the hub of the ETT often loosens and will no longer stay inserted in the tube. The more our practitioners try to “jam” them back in, the worse the situation becomes.
Previously, the only effective, responsible way to remedy this was a full exchange for a new tube. There is cost and risk associated with both the frequent disconnects and the tube exchange.
This has been a problem for as long as we’ve been using ETTs and finally isn’t anymore!
